Olive oil soap

Ingredients
- 200 g coconut oil (20%)
- 800 g refined, light olive oil (80%)
- 137 g NaOH (5% superfatting)
- 300 g distilled water
- optionally 1-2 tsp clay (pink, green or white) or activated charcoal
- 30 g essential oil lavender
- Alcohol (95%) for spraying
- e.g. tray made of 12 square silicone individual molds
Here's how:
- Gently melt the coconut oil, add the olive oil and let the mixture cool to about 35–40°C.
- Prepare the lye from NaOH and distilled water, observing safety regulations. Pour the cooled lye into the oil and then thicken the mixture using a hand blender.
- If desired, add the clay (depending on the amount added, the soap will later take on different colors, e.g. rosé, as shown on the book cover) or the activated charcoal and the essential oil and mix everything again until you have a homogeneous mass.
- Now the soap can be poured into the prepared mold. Here, I used a tray made of twelve individual square silicone molds. I bought mine in the USA from Bramble Berry.
- Spray with alcohol (95%), cover with foil and insulate – the soap needs a maturation time of 10-12 weeks, or longer if desired.
variant
You can also make a soap with 100% olive oil (olive oil is considered a solid fat during saponification, even though it's liquid). Since this soap would be very soft at a normal water content of 33%, you'll need to reduce the water content to the same amount as the NaOH.
Recipe
1000 g olive oil, 125 g NaOH (7% .F), and 125 g water. Spray with 95% alcohol, cover, and insulate well. The maturation period is also at least 10–12 weeks.
