Knitting a small basket – easy DIY instructions for beginners
Whether as a bread basket, onion storage, or bathroom organizer, this small knitted basket is not only super practical but also a perfect project for beginners. With thick recycled cotton and simple stitches, it's quick to make—no sewing experience required. If you like, you can decorate it with a leather label or rivet for an extra touch of Scandinavian chic.

material
50 g We Are Knitters The Tape in grey (100% recycled cotton, LL approx. 120 m/250 g) leather strips and 1 rivet or label if required
needles
Needle set 8.0 mm

Basic pattern
Garter stitch in the round: Knit the first round, then purl the next round. Stockinette stitch in the round: Knit all stitches.
Gauge
With 8 mm needles, stockinette stitch: 12 stitches and 17 rows = 10 x 10 cm
Instructions
Cast on 40 sts, distribute evenly over the play of needles: 10 sts per needle, join to form a round. 1st–4th round or until piece measures 2.5 cm: work in garter stitch. 5th–24th round or until piece measures 16 cm: work in stockinette stitch. 25th–27th round or until piece measures 18 cm: work 2 sts together each time until there are only 5 sts left on the needle.

Cut the end thread to about 20 cm and thread it onto the wool needle. Thread the remaining stitches onto the wool needle, pull the opening closed, and secure the thread.
Fold over the edge and, if desired, rivet the leather strip for decoration. Rivets are available online or at haberdashery stores. Please follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Care
Wash according to the care instructions on the label and allow to dry. While still damp, stretch into shape. If necessary, place a rolled-up towel upright in the basket and allow it to dry in shape.
If the basket is made with leather strips, clean according to the leather care instructions.
Variants
The pattern is written for a small basket. For larger baskets, simply cast on more stitches. For size M, for example, cast on 60 stitches, for size L, for example, cast on 70 stitches. Adjust the length to your liking. To ensure stability, the basket should not be too tall, but rather have a cube shape.
