Planting terrariums

Planted terrariums were all the rage in plush living rooms at the turn of the 20th century and are now making a comeback. This is due to the fact that the glass containers create a favorable microclimate.

As long as the plants receive sufficient light and warmth, they can be placed anywhere. Terrariums look attractive, and if the relationship between the shapes of the container and the plants is taken into account when planting, the glass containers perfectly showcase their inhabitants. The effect is best achieved when you limit yourself to either a single plant, such as an Echeveria elegans, or create a miniature landscape with two or three species. Asparagus setaceus (ornamental asparagus), Nertera granadensis (coral berry), or small cacti are good options for this. Tillandsia species are ideal for a minimalist terrarium because they obtain water and nutrients from the air.

Terrariums also look great in groups. Try similar models in different sizes or a themed collection, such as three or four old apothecary bottles. Whether it's a goldfish bowl or a preserving jar, a lantern or a glass dome: combine as you see fit. The glass containers create a microclimate that's good for plants: moist, warm, and protected from drafts. The glass also makes it easy to study the green inhabitants, and you have a choice of location. They fit well on a desk or dining table, but can also stand on their own as an eye-catcher on a shelf or side table. Terrariums require minimal maintenance. Closed terrariums, in particular, develop their own water cycle. Open terrariums need to be watered occasionally. Otherwise, you should only clean the glass occasionally so the plants are clearly visible.

Suitable plants for terrariums

  • aloe
  • Begonia rex (King Begonia)
  • Chlorophytum comosum (spider plant)
  • Crassula ovata (money tree)
  • Ferns (smaller species) Hedera (ivy)
  • Hypoestes phyllostachya (sheath claw)
  • Peperomia caperata (Wrinkled Peperomia)
  • Sansevieria trifasciata (snake plant)
  • Tillandsia (Tillandsia)

Tip: Tillandsias, ivy and ferns thrive particularly well in closed terrariums.

Here's how:

  • For closed terrariums, choose plants that need moist substrate and little light.
  • Open terrariums are low-maintenance miniature gardens. The plants require more light and need to be watered more often.
  • In open terrariums, ensure adequate drainage. Depending on the size, add 1–3 cm of gravel, followed by the planting substrate.
  • Ideal are plants with small leaves that grow slowly and tolerate high humidity.
  • Try the arrangement outside the terrarium first – there you have more freedom of movement.
  • Planting and care tools with long handles are available for purchase. However, a spoon and fork, a long pair of cucumber tongs, and one or two chopsticks serve the same purpose.
  • Cover the substrate with a layer of moss, pebbles or small pieces of bark.
  • When everything is ready, wipe the inside of the glass with a clean, dry cloth.
