Make your own plant labels
Labels are a must if you want to know what you've sown or pricked out and when. Name tags and messages written in beautiful handwriting make gardening even more fun. Lettering on bottles, slates, pottery shards, clay pots, wooden slats, or cutlery adds a personal touch. Forks, knives, and spoons are best suited for herbs and vegetables.

Writing utensils
Make sure you use waterproof pens, which are available in a wide range of colors. White, gold, and silver lettering looks particularly elegant. Pencils are sufficient for simple seeding signs made of wood or Tetra Pak cartons.
Cutlery
Collect and label old or disposable cutlery from the last party. Knives, forks, and spoons are especially tempting when serving snack vegetables and salad herbs.
Glass bottles on sticks
Remove the labels from the bottles. Use a white, waterproof pen to label the bottles with the name of the plant and, if desired, the sowing date, etc.
Place them upside down on iron or wooden poles. With white, green, brown, or blue bottles, you have plenty of choice to add color to the blooms in your garden.
Slate slabs
Black slate slabs with white lettering immediately recall school blackboards. They're perfect for jotting down botanical information. Available from construction companies and roofers, these slates have a hole in them for hanging from a metal or wooden pole. Or you can stick them directly into the ground.
Thinking further
Instead of handwriting, plant names and dates can also be engraved onto the sign using special stamps. Special stamps are available from specialist retailers for this purpose.
